"The Water Spirit" was inspired by the long tradition of feminine figures at sea, sirens and mermaids and water goddesses who answer to no one and hold their own star. Enger sought to celebrate sovereignty and sensuality without apology, placing a full-bodied mermaid at the center of a vessel that wraps around to ocean waves and a crescent moon on the back. Built from a thrifted glass vessel with hand-formed papier-mâché handles and painted in coral pink, cobalt, and gold, the piece creates a joyful, maximalist experience for the viewer and is best at home in a bathroom, bedroom, or anywhere a little magic is welcome.
